The Indian Medical Association vice-president Dr Navjot Dahiya termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘super spreader’ blaming him for the second wave of Covid-19 which is hitting the country hard.

He faulted Modi for throwing all the Covid-19 protocols to the wind during his election campaigns and rallies. The medical fraternity had been trying hard to tackle the pandemic by making the people understand the need to follow the Covid protocols but Modi did not give any regard to them during his election campaign, he told The Tribune.

Dr Dahiya also raised doubts over the central government’s commitment to tackle the pandemic as election rallies and religious congregations like Kumbh Mela continued even when the Covid crisis was intense.

There is an acute shortage of medical oxygen which is leading to the demise of lakhs of patients and there are many applications pending with the Centre seeking clearance to set up oxygen plants, Dr Dahiya pointed out.

He told The Tribune that the situation in the country was really pathetic with bodies piling up at the crematoriums and ambulances forming long queues outside the hospitals.

Dr Dahiya slammed Modi for trying to pass the buck of its failure on the private medical sector and state governments. Many global news organisations had already criticised Modi and his government for their inept handling of the second wave of Covid-19.

The IMA vice-president took exception to Modi according permission to the farmers’ stir in Delhi. He did not act in a responsible manner by allowing the farmers to stage a protest which was a potential ground for the spread of Covid-19, he pointed out.

At the same time, Dr Dahiya said the entire medical system is failing as PM did not take any step to strengthen it during the entire year.

In January 2020, Modi, instead of making arrangements to tackle the infection, when the first Coronavirus case was registered in the country, organised gatherings with over 1 lakh people in Gujarat to welcome the then US President Donald Trump, reported The Times of India.

This is not the time to blame, it’s a personal view of IMA office bearer not that of IMA.
