Big wars have always started when a significantly bigger super power wants to exert its supremacy over a weaker nation for any of power, money, resources or ego ... and then another super power that wants to push back  comes and starts supporting the weaker among the two and coalitions form and gets converted into an international war or world War if it becomes bigger
