It is a very uncomfortable and sad truth that in certain states "some" elements within upper castes cannot  let go of their atavistic, tribal and chauvinistic attitude.

Don't want to name the caste affiliation of a certain acquaintance but the apartment where I lived in Hyderabad - there was a guy who told me that -

"Maa thatha inti mudu evaraina ST or SC's/ Mala/Madigalu nadusthey cheppulu theesukuni chethilo pettukuni nadavali" - nenu adigaanu ala cheyyakapoothey enti antey - athani response is "Valla gudaaralu lechipothayi".

Imagine someone still is holding on to that kind of pride and ideology.  

And because of some backward elements within these castes - the entire caste itself gets unfairly tarred with a broad chauvinist brush.

In the case mentioned in the thread - in the interest of fairness, law and order and last but not the least justice - the perpetrators should receive the sternest possible punishment under the law of the land. 

Ideally speaking the family of the victim should decide the punishment in my book but of course I am not in charge here.
