U.K. Treasury Chief Kwasi Kwarteng Fired Amid Market Pressure

Prime Minister Liz Truss is set to hold a press conference later Friday following upheaval in markets and rebellion in her party

LON­DON—U.K. Prime Min­is­ter Liz Truss fired Trea­sury chief Kwasi Kwarteng, in an at­tempt to sal­vage her ten­ure fol­low­ing pres­sure from her Con­ser­v­a­tive Party and in­ternational mar­kets.

Mr. Kwarteng, who just three weeks ago pre­sented the largest tax cuts since the 1970s, was re­placed af­ter mar­kets balked at the scale of the bor­row­ing re­quired to fund the growth pack­age. Ms. Kwarteng be­came the sec­ond-short­est-serv­ing chan­cel­lor in re­cent British his­tory.

Ms. Truss is ex­pected to re­verse key parts of her planned tax cuts Fri­day, a se­nior of­fi­cial said, as her eco­nomic plan to jolt the U.K. into growth un­rav­els af­ter a back­lash from fi­nan­cial mar­kets and her party.

The U.K. Was in Crisis Under Prime Minister Liz Truss. She Just Resigned.

U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned on Thursday after a disastrous six-week tenure that saw the pound and bond markets crash.

The pound rose 0.5 $1.1267. The benchmark 10-year U.K. government bond was also little changed with a yield of 3.831%. The 30-year yield fell slightly to at 3.888%. The blue-chip FTSE100 index was up 0.4%.

 

The situation came to a head less than a week after Truss fired her finance chief. His replacement quickly reversed a raft of tax cuts, helping restore calm to the market but undermining the platform Truss had campaigned on.

Truss said that the ruling Conservative Party will now hold a new leadership election within the next week. It seems unlikely that whoever is chosen would pursue policies that risk spooking markets again.

On Wednesday, the Home Secretary resigned and a vote in Parliament descended into chaos. Truss announced her resignation on Thursday after meeting with Graham Brady, the head of the committee of Conservative Party lawmakers that sets the rules for leadership elections.

It’s been a wild ride for bonds in the past month. After announcing plans for the biggest tax cuts in decades on Sept. 23, yields started to spike on concerns that inflation would spiral further out of control. The Bank of England stepped in to put a lid on long-term borrowing costs, preventing the collapse of pension funds that are heavily invested in gilts.
