guys, In need for a financial advisor who can guide me to plan the housing, Kids eduction, and retirement. 

Any of you guys tried to hire someone ? how can i find a good one. 

what are the parameters that should be used to assess a financial advisor.

Vanguard/Fidelity/Schwab - they all have advisory wings. 

Reference based. 

There are fee based advisors who talk to you, suggest (not advice) a plan and thats all. 

Any one that tries to sell you something in the name of advisory - run away from them. Examples include - insurance policies. 

My personal 2c - Dont get biased towards desi advisors only. Keep an open mind and go with someone who you think will work in your best interests. 

If you are starting from ground zero - % fee advisors are less motivated as it takes few years for your portfolio to grow.

IMO..

if your goal is saving money...then why wasting money on advisory fees...?

you can explore options youself..start reading some personal finance blogs videos or news papers...

Is your networth over 500k excluding house. Do you earn more than 350k every year ?

If not, please study some investing principles and don't waste money on advisors ...

Max out 401K -22K per year

Contribute to IRA (6500 or so every year per earning individual)

these should take care of your retirement.. 

for kids education, you can open an IRA on their name or go for 529.. both have their advs and disadvs 

If you have even more money after that, then you can invest in stocks on your own if you have good knowledge or just go for robo investing like betterment..

This one . Andhariki chadavalante back baruvu...instead of Instagram,  read some books 15 mins or just read personal finance subreddit wiki..

Financial advisors usually sell you some funds or policies that they get a benefit or commission from.. they don’t always have your best financial interests in their mind..
