Tanvi Marupally Found

Tanvi left Conway Junior High School on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and continued walking North on Davis Street, instead of getting on the bus.

After leaving school, Tanvi followed train tracks for several miles through the night until she found a train to board. Over the next handful of days, she made her way to Kansas City, where she arrived on approximately Sunday, Jan. 22. There, she checked into a homeless shelter under a fake name. She lived in the Kansas City area for around two months, until she relocated by bus to Tampa, Florida. “As far as we know, it was a random choice,” Tapley said. In Tampa, she lived in an abandoned building.

“Tanvi’s love for the library is ultimately what led to her discovery,” Tapley said. While visiting a public library to do research on jobs she might be able to find via Craiglist, a Tampa-area citizen recognized Tanvi from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children website. That individual took a picture of Tanvi and sent it to the organization on Tuesday, March 28. By the next morning, CPD received the image and worked in collaboration with the Tampa Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service to verify that the child photographed was indeed Tanvi.

When asked if the CPD has more information regarding why Tanvi ran away, Tapley said, “We believe that it was due to the stress involved from information that she believed the family might end up being deported.
