Yes, Google announced on January 20, 2023 that it would be laying off 12,000 employees, or 6% of its global workforce. This is the first time Google has laid off employees since 2015.

The layoffs come at a time when Google is facing a number of challenges, including a slowdown in revenue growth and increased competition from rivals like Amazon and Microsoft. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to employees that the layoffs were necessary to "ensure that we are best positioned for long-term growth and success."

The layoffs will affect employees across all levels and functions at Google, and they are expected to save the company $1 billion per year. Google has said that it will provide severance packages and other assistance to affected employees.

The layoffs are likely to have a ripple effect throughout the tech industry, as other companies may follow suit in order to cut costs. They are also a sign of the changing times in the tech industry, as companies are facing increasing pressure to generate profits and compete with rivals.
