GLASGOW: Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian woman and the second person from the country to clinch a historic Commonwealth Games medal in artistic gymnastics when she won the women's vault bronze at the SSE Hydro on Thursday.

Ashish Kumar had won India's maiden gymnastics medals in CWG when he scalped the men's vault silver and men's floor bronze fours years ago in New Delhi.

England's Claudia Fragapane won the gold with an average score of 14.633 while Canada's Elsabeth Black took home the silver with 14.433.

Agartala-born Dipa got the bronze with an average score of 14.366. The 20-year-old had scored a mere 13.633 points in Vault 1, the lowest out of eight competitors in the final.

However, in a remarkable comeback, Dipa scored the highest in Vault 2 with 15.100 to bring up her average to 14.366.

Earlier in the day, Ashish had finished sixth in the men's floor final where he took bronze in 2010.

With a score of 15.533 points, England's Max Whitlock clinched the gold while Canada's Scott Morgan (15.133) took the silver. New Zealander David Bishop (14.55) won the bronze.

The 23-year-old Ashish finished sixth out of eight competitors with a score of 13.8 points.

Glasgow: Indian wrestler Babita Kumari put on a stunning show to win the gold medal beating Canada's Brittanee Laverdure in the final of the women's 55kg freestyle category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SECC Hall here on Thursday. (Day 8 Blog | Medals | Results)

The 24-year-old Babita, who had bagged the silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, won 9-2 against the 32-year-old Brittanee, who ended up injuring her finger during the bout.

Babita dominated most of the proceedings and it was only in the last 15 seconds that Brittanne managed to open her scoring but by then it was all over.

Sharath-Amalraj make men's doubles semifinals at CWG

India paddlers Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj marched into the men's doubles semifinals at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

Kamal, who put up a disappointing show in India's poor team championship campaign, remains in the medal hunt with a convincing win over England's Danny Reed and Sam Walker 12-10 11-6 7-11 11-8 in the quarterfinals held at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

However, Kamal and Shamini Kumaresan experienced a bitter loss against Reed and Kelly Sibley in the mixed doubles quarterfinals. The Indians fought back well after losing the plot early but eventually went down 7-11 9-11 11-5 14-12 4-11.

Soumyajit Ghosh and Harmeet Desai lost 12-10 11-9 11-8 11-8 against the mighty Singapore pairing of Gao Ning and Li Hu in another quarterfinal.

Earlier today, rising Indian table tennis player Manika Batra fought her way into the women's singles quarterfinals while Kamal entered the quarterfinals of men's doubles and mixed doubles.

Batra, the 19-year-old from Delhi, recovered from a two game deficit to beat Canadian teenager Anqi Luo 11-13 11-7 8-11 11-2 11-7 11-9 at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

The 159th-ranked Indian meets World No.41 Ye Lin of Singapore in the quarterfinals later today.

In other categories, Kamal-Kumaresan defeated Australia's David Powell and Jian Fang Lay 11-6 8-11 4-11 13-11 11-7 in the mixed doubles fourth round.

The pair of Kamal and Amalraj were too good for Ryan Jenkins and Stephen Jenkins of Wales in the men's doubles. The Indians won the third round match 11-8 11-4 11-9.

Desai and Ghosh also entered the last eight stage with a 8-11 11-8 11-6 11-5 win over Northern Ireland's Paul McCreery and Ashley Robinson.

Kamal, Ghosh and Desai are also scheduled to play their second round matches in the men's singles later today.
