Earth is currently undergoing irreversible damage. To make sure life continues beyond Earth, we need to explore our own solar system and then the neighboring star systems to find a place suitable for life as we know it.

Even if Earth was not undergoing global warming, there will be an impact event sometime or the other. There are only two choices we have. Either become a Multi-planetary system or Die here on Earth, assuming Earth was as pristine as it was before Industrial Revolution.

Since we screwed our mother planet so badly, now there is no other option than to find an alternative place for humanity and millions of other species as well.

Intelligent people who understand this point and have the capability to do something are already doing something in the direction of space exploration.

Elon Musk is one such individual who is vigorously trying to create spaceships to ship people to Mars and also invest in terra-forming Mars.

Stephen hawking along with a russian billionaire is investing in an exciting new technology called Solar-sail, which utilizes sun's photonic emissions as its driving force to reach at least 50% of the speed of light without any expense of additional energy sources required to travel fast and far to reach nearest Star systems close to our solar system much early than it is possible currently with other technologies. These are all high-tech stuff but the grassroot emotions are very common. That is trying to Survive!

Infact they are trying to do something by using intelligence than just sitting idle and complaining that we are destroying Earth and no one can help us. Remember the Earth is undergoing irreversible damage already so the only alternative is space exploration for that we need to know number of stars, number of planets, need man mission to mars and need lunar stations and then terra-from mars to replicate the conditions we see here on earth.
