About two months after deaths of children at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur created a national uproar, leading to the arrest of the institution’s principal, a doctor and other staff, the number of deaths at the hospital continue to remain high. Nineteen children have died at the hospital in the last 24 hours — 13 neonatal (newborn) deaths, and six others suffering from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), according to BRD Medical College principal P K Singh. Sixty-nine deaths have been reported at the hospital in the four days since October 7. In the second week of August, 60 deaths were reported over five days. “Most of these deaths are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to various reasons — such as pneumonia, septicemia, asphyxia, etc,” college principal Singh said. He said a large number of newborns in critical condition are coming to the hospital from far-off places. “There are 118 children admitted at NICU at present, of which 13 died due to different medical reasons,” Singh said. “There are 333 patients admitted in the pediatric ward.” Of these 333 patients, 109 children are suffering from AES, he said. According to hospital records, the number of patients admitted varied between 333 and 360 over the last four days, and the number of deaths varied from 12 to 20 each day. According to records, 12 children died on October 7, 20 on October 8, 18 died on October 9, and 19 deaths were reported on October 10.

Asked about these deaths, Singh maintained, “Most of these deaths are in NICU due to various medical reasons, and the rest are due to AES.” The deaths in August had grabbed national attention after reports that the hospital faced shortage of oxygen supply at the time. Although the state government had denied that the deaths were due to oxygen shortage, action was taken against the then college principal, in-charge of the particular ward as well as clerks and the pharmacist for negligence. An FIR was lodged against them, as well as the supplier of liquid oxygen to the hospital, and all the accused have been arrested.

Lucknow: Sixteen children, including ten infants, died at the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur during the last 24 hours, authorities said on Monday.

Of the children who died, ten were admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while six were in the paediatric ICU.

According to reports, 20 patients – including six from Deoria, two from Kushinagar, four each from Gorakhpur and Maharajganj, and one patient each from Basti and Balrampur – afflicted with encephalitis have been admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours.

As many as three dozen patients, mostly affected by encephalitis, were being treated at BRD Medical College. Five patients from Bihar were also being treated there, doctors said.

Officials said that 1,470 patients have been admitted to the BRD Medical College since January this year, adding that a total of 310 have died.

The BRD Medical College hit the headlines earlier in August when over 63 children, including infants, died within a span of one week due to disruption in oxygen supply by the vendor.

The FIR was lodged against nine people, including the owner of the oxygen supplying company and the principal of BRD Medical College.

An inquiry into those deaths pinned blame for mismanagement on two senior doctors.

Doctors said the latest deaths did not occur due to lack of oxygen, treatment or anything else but the fact that they were brought to the hospital in a very critical condition.

A total of 290 children died in the hospital in the month of August, of whom 213 died in the neo-natal ICU ward and 77 in the encephalitis ward, principal P. K. Singh had told PTI.

Even as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his health minister claim that all is well, 16 more children, out of which 10 were infants, died in Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in the last 24 hours.

Ironically, these 16 deaths occurred a day after the State Health Minister Dr Siddharth Nath Singh launched 'Mission Indradhanush (Rainbow) campaign' to save children from deadly diseases at an early age.

Hospital sources claimed that ten deaths were reported from the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while six died in the Paediatric ICU in the past 24 hours. About 20 children, afflicted with Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), were admitted in the hospital in the last 24 hours from Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti, Balrampur, and Bihar. Only four survived.

Dr Mahima Mittal, Head Medicine, said that most of these children were admitted in a very critical stage and almost had no survival chances. "We had put them into the ICU and NICU but despite our best efforts they succumbed," said Dr Mittal.

A resident of Kushinagar, Rajkumar's son and daughter both were admitted at the BRD Medical College on Saturday with AES.

"My son succumbed and doctors have given up hope for my daughter also," said a wailing Rajkumar, who went for the cremation of the son while wife stayed back to look after their daughter.

"Doctors say just pray to God. Is there no treatment available to save my only son?" asked Nebulal, another parent, sobbing uncontrollably.

About 31 children had died at the BRD Medical College on August 10 and 11 when the oxygen supplier had snapped the supply over non-payment of dues. A total of 16 children had died in the month of August, sparking national outrage.

CM Adityanah had ordered a high-level probe and a FIR against nine hospital staff, including the oxygen supplier was lodged. All the nine accused - former principal of BRD Medical College Dr Rajeev Agarwal, his wife Dr Purnima Shukla, Dr Kafeel Ahmed Khan, Dr Satish Kumar, Dr Gajananad Jaiswal, owner of Pushpa Sales Pvt Ltd Manish Bhandari, three account department clerks Udai Pratap Singh, Sanjay Kumar and Sudhir Kumar - are behind bars in connection with deaths in August.

They are facing charges under Sections 120-B, 308 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, 7/13 of Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 15 of the Indian Medical Council Act.
