  • CricPokChic changed the title to IPL player retention 2018:Auction date confirmed on Jan 27th and 28th in Bengaluru:Retention List must be submitted before Jan4th

IPL auction to be held on January 27, 28

The 2018 IPL auction will be held on January 27 and 28, in Bangalore. That means the mega auction will coincide with the final two days of India's third Test on the tour of South Africa; Virat Kohli's team is scheduled to play the final Test of the South Africa tour from January 24-28 in Johannesburg.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the IPL has asked all eight franchises to submit their final list of retained players by January 4. The IPL is likely to finalise the pool of players who will be up for auction around January 18.

At the IPL Governing Council (GC) meeting, held on December 6, one of the members had expressed reservations about the auction clashing with the Johannesburg Test. Also some of the franchises were interested in seeing how the domestic players fared in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (India's domestic Twenty20 competition), which ends on January 28, ahead of the auction.

The GC had also approved the retention rules at the same meeting. Franchises have been allowed retain a maximum of five of their existing players through a combination of player retention before the auction and the use of right-to-match cards during the auction.

The IPL also set a salary cap of INR 80 crore (US$12.4 million approx) for every team, and made it clear that franchises will need to spend a minimum 75% of the purse.

Of the five players, a franchise can retain a maximum of three through retention in the lead up to the auction, and a maximum of three through right-to-match cards during the auction. If a franchise does not retain any player before the auction, it can still retain only three using right-to-match cards. A right-to-match card gives the franchise the ability to buy back its player during the auction by matching the highest bid made for the player by another franchise, once the bidding is over.

The other restrictions on player retention are: a maximum of three capped Indian players can be retained, and only two overseas players and two uncapped Indian players can be retained.

BCCI reschedules domestic tournament ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 auctions

BCCI rescheduled domestic tournaments

New Delhi: The 11th season of the razzmatazz Indian Premier League (IPL) will witness the mega auctions in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28 as confirmed by a senior BCCI official. The 11th edition of the star-studded IPL will welcome back the scrapped franchises of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. With the budget of Rs, 66 crores increased to Rs, 80 crores, this edition of the premier T20 tournament will store a lot of surprises for sure.

However, to enable domestic players to showcase their talent and for the benefit of the franchises to forge their teams, there has been a change of schedule for the domestic tournaments by BCCI.

In view of the IPL Player Auction which is scheduled from the 27-28th January 2018, the T20 Zonal League and Syed Mushtaq Ali Knock out (except the final match) will be held before the IPL Player Auction.

BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary said in an official statement, "In view of the IPL Player Auction which is scheduled from the 27-28th January 2018, there has been a change of schedule for the domestic tournaments."

Here are the revised dates for the domestic tournaments:

The 11th edition of IPL will also highlight a re-shuffle of players as well. But, a franchise can retain a maximum of five players, which includes two Right to Match cards.

The player rules for the Right to Match are a maximum number of three Capped Indian players, a maximum number of two overseas players, a maximum number of two uncapped Indian players.

For CSK and RR, as per the new policy, they would be able to retain players from their last squad, who haven’t played on any other team except their replacements – Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant.

IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir open to leave Kolkata Knight Riders

Gautam Gambhir joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the fourth edition, and led them to two title victories — in 2012 and 2014.

In the inaugural edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2007, Gautam Gambhiropened his account playing for his home team, Delhi Daredevils (DD). He, however, shifted base to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who were struggling to live upto expectations in the opening seasons. Nonetheless, the tides changed significantly for the franchise. While KKR’s title track — Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo re (Karenge, Ladenge, Jeetenge) — seemed insignificant till 2010 edition, Gambhir made it an instant hit with two title victories under his captaincy in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Since then, Gambhir has built a core side and led aggressively.

Ahead of IPL auctions 2018, Gambhir is yet to get in touch with KKR team management. According to the new rules, every franchise have to submit a list of (five) players for retention prior to the auction in January 2018. The signs do not look encouraging, and we may see Gambhir donning a new jersey in the eleventh season.

Ahead of Delhi’s Ranji Trophy 2017-18 final versus Vidarbha, Gambhir spoke about all possibilities.

“It is very surprising that I have not spoken to anyone (in KKR management). I don’t know about myself (future with KKR). We’ll probably sit and talk after the Ranji final. But yes I am (open to playing for any franchise). You have achieved so much for KKR. You have done whatever you could.

If things do not work out in future, the good part is that you are leaving a franchise on a good note, when it has become a successful franchise. Not when you were struggling. As a professional, you want different challenges. There is nothing wrong in it. That’ll keep you motivated and hungry,” told Hindustan Times.

Gambhir sounded practical and is looking forward to building a new side in KKR (amidst several shuffling expected in auction). Nonetheless, he doesn’t mind shifting base and part ways on a good note.
