hyderabad: The much awaited 16-km Metro Rail stretch between Ameerpet and LB Nagar will finally be thrown open to the public on September 24, making Corridor 1 (LB Nagar-Miyapur) of the Hyderabad Metro fully operational. With this inauguration, 46km out of the proposed 72km Hyderabad Metro Rail will become operational, making the city’s Metro the longest in the country after Delhi Metro.

Sources said the works for the Ameerpet to Shilparamam (HiTec City) stretch are likely to be completed by October this year and will be opened to the public after safety clearances. The state government has already announced that it will be taking up airport connectivity from various areas such as LB Nagar, Falaknuma, Raidurg and IT corridor in the second phase. Sources said chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is likely to take part in the inauguration.Trial runs on the Ameerpet-LB Nagar stretch are being carried out over the past one month and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) gave the safety certification after getting a nod for the safety assessment report of the Communication Based Train System from M/s Halcrow (UK), the independent safety assessor for the signalling system of the Hyderabad Metro.

HMRL sources said that with the opening of this Metro stretch, ridership is expected to touch two lakh per day as as it will reduce travel time by half. “While road travel from LB Nagar to Miyapur takes about two hours during peak hours and over an hour during non-peak hours, Metro travel will reduce the time to about 52 minutes,” said a senior HMRL official.
