In a twisted tale of events, a family in Mumbai bonded over a murder. A 32-year-old Nalasopara woman allegedly killed her husband’s third and latest wife with the help of her two minor stepdaughters. The body of Yogita Devre, 35, was found in a secluded spot in Nalasopara on March 1.

The perpetrator, identified as Parvati Mane, has been arrested by the police. She is the second wife of Sushil Mishra, 45, a contract labourer. Sushil’s first wife lives in Uttar Pradesh with his two minor daughters from the first wife.

Sushil married a third time just a year ago. He left Mane and his two daughters and moved to Devre’s home, also in Nalasopara. According to a report by TOI, Sushil was not providing any financial support to her and his daughters. She told the police that Sushil had even refused to have physical relations with her and insulted her in front of Devre.

Section 494 and 495 of the Indian Penal Code of 1860, prohibited polygamy for the Christians. In 1955, the Hindu Marriage Act was drafted, which prohibited marriage of a Hindu whose spouse was still living. Thus polygamy became illegal in Indiain 1956, uniformly for all of its citizens except for Muslims, who are permitted to have four wives and for Hindus in Goa and along the western coast where bigamy is legal.

A polygamous Hindu marriage is null and void. While the punishment specified in articles 494 and 495 is applicable, it is rare if the first spouse does not have an objection.
