Yes, what they did here is bribe someone to fake that they have a good sports/extra curricular activities. What rich people usually do, is get information from their connections and get the credentials required for admission. It is different.

I think there is a difference between

1. Bribing - what Lori louglin etc did by giving sports coaches money  - illegal

2. Lobbying- How a lot of people with influence get in - this is what people are saying is illegal. I am not quite sure, but some contend it is.

3. Donation- paying for a research facility etc- what rich people do- legal

Donation is legal, adi cheste tappu ledu. I don't think lobbying is illegal as well, that's how laws are passed in this country. E Bill pass avvali anna people lobby. Having said that, I don't think this is what you call in an admissions committee. Having influential connections help but doesn't guarantee an admission. So, it's not technically lobbying.

I think for most Indians the concept of recommendations is hard to digest. We are not used to it. IITs and IIMs (the very good ones) have a straight forward admission test and may be a few round of interviews after that. More or less this process feels like someone got in by merit. When you talk about recommendations, there is a chance for people to falsify information. Ya know saying things like “He invented the internet” kind of stuff. However, if you look at admissions at famous schools, they are a little liberal with people who are influential. All Lokesh has to say is that he is the son of the man heading a major political party and that would more or less be enough. He doesn’t need to falsify information. He doesn’t need other people to lobby for him.

1. What rich people do with college admissions is NOT lobbying. (Lobbying generally involves lawyers and politicians making policy changes and has nothing to do with college admissions.) I only gave lobbying as an example of legality in an earlier conversation.

2. Lobbying is not illegal. The activity of lobbying has been interpreted by court rulings as constitutionally protected free speech and a way to petition the government for the redress of grievances, two of the freedoms protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.
