My cats are too needy. I would never do that. I give them frozen raw food from treats unleashed twice a day and wet food from PetSmart once a day. They are very picky about their food. They are spoiled.

Our cat is more capable and stronger than we think and our cat thinks. Just remember we could leave a cat home for a couple of days in case we need to go out of town. Don't hesitate to push their boundaries and they become stronger. Cats may seem needy but they are very independent and don't care if they are left alone!! They may look like crying toddlers going to daycare for the first time - they are anything but crying from loneliness.

I did this only once with my previous 2 boy-cats when I had to go out of town for 2 days and there were all fine as I left enough wet food (this goes bad after a day), dry food, water, treats, toys, litter, etc. Another time when I had to go for 5 days, I had to leave them at a pet-care provider (these are like daycare firms for pets) and they were fine. Also, PetSmart has PetsHotel inside their store where we can leave our pet and go out of town for days. If leaving them home alone, provide lots of dry food, water and multiple litter pans as each pan is good for 2 days approx.

Since there is some interest from other members here about adopting cats, adding these here thinking that it might help someone with similar needs (no need to read if you are not into cats)

I take Lulu out for a walk every evening on a leash/harness to socialize and make her a fearless  cat but she just wants to desperately get back inside the house! Most cats would rather prefer to stay indoors "alone" all day and all night than spend even a few minutes outdoors. I check the Weather every morning and set the heater to be warm before heading to work. When I return in the evening, she comes out with this adorable, drowsy, sleepy face with half-closed eyes giving an expression, "Why did you return so early? You disturbed my golden sleep!"

Lulu is probably the World's Pickiest Eater and NOT a food lover. She weighed like a "balloon" when I adopted her in Jan and she still likes to be a slim girl. I feed her wet food 4-5 times a day (a 3 oz can every 3 hours - there is 4 bowls of wet food rotated), dry treats twice a day, broths, Stay-Fresh Natural Treats and there are 4 big bowls of dry food always around. She eats only 10-15% of each wet can and the rest goes waste and that's ok with me. She doesn't even look at some foods and I keep a track of what she is not liking so I don't buy them again. The abundance of food is to insure sustenance in case I don't return home due to some unforeseen incident until the cat is rescued  and is not locked in the house with no food.

You don't have to feed 4-5 cans of wet food a day (that's just my way of spoiling her and I feed 5-6 cans on weekends). It's ok to feed wet food twice a day and always leave dry food around. I've seen some people getting pets "just to give company to their kids" but they treat the pets like sh*it leaving them in the cold garage all day and feeding same cheap dry food every single day. Yeah, right. A pet is just like another kid! How can anyone abuse them? We can judge a person's character from the way s/he treats animals!!

Some types of Fancy Feast foods (average cost a dollar for each can) are fine but stay away from the cheap/over-processed Friskies. For instance, Lulu dislikes anything that is creamy, florentines and some pates (cats know what is not good for them unless cheap/bad food is all we feed them). Both of these brands are discontinued by Petco as they say these don't meet their Nutrition Standards. But some types of Fancy Feast are ok once in while to alternate it with other grain-free foods. Many brands are from Purina including Fancy Feast, ProPlan, Beyond, etc. and they also make grain-free stuff. Lulu likes Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals, Medleys, Cheeses, Gravy Lovers, Delights, I AND LOVE AND YOU, etc. She also likes the ProPlan, Beyond, Merricks brand grain-free foods. In dry food, only the I AND LOVE AND YOU grain-free Chicken+Duck/Salmon+Trout/Surf N Chick, Beyond Tuna+Lentil, FF Gourmet Naturals Seafood. She doesn't like the Chicken dry foods or treats a lot but she is into salmon, tuna, whitefish and shrimp. Also, she doesn't like any food printed with "KITTEN" on them (meant for little cats and not adult cats) - even though she is still a kitten. I've tried many other brands but these are the ones she would eat.

Chicken, Tuna, Salmon, Beef, Whitefish, Shrimp are some major varieties in cat food. There are some rare items such as Venison, Duck, Rabbit, etc. and there are mixed varieties with vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, lentils, rice, wild rice, pasta, etc. These are all pre-cooked foods packed in cans. Cats are not vegans and so, never feed a cat vegan food - even if you are a vegan. If you cannot stomach feeding meats to a cat, you should consider another type of pet.

Wet food is the best for cats and raw food is even better. A cat on dry food is surviving - not thriving. They may look healthy but they are dying inside! The big pet food companies are only after your money your cat is a $ sign to them!!

Go for grain-free foods. Dry food is cheaper but they could "very likely" end up with severe health issues later on with dry food if it is not grain-free.

She is microchipped and has a name tag in her neck with my contact info on its back embossed to insure her identity. I carry Emergency Cards in my valet and keychain just in case if I become ill or injured or cannot reach home (a pet is like a kid and we should do everything to make sure they are always safe and secure):

Many cats lose all of their teeth within 3 years of age from gingivitis, etc. (for no fault of theirs!). BRUSH their teeth "every single day" because plaque builds up within 24 hours if not brushed. If we brush her everyday, she would have her teeth intact and healthy for her lifetime! We humans brush twice a day and so, brushing them at least once a day is the least we could do and it only takes a minute or two. Brushing just once or twice a week is as good as not brushing. You only need to brush the outer side of their teeth and mainly the molar teeth (where gingivitis grows) as their rough tongue keeps their inner side clean. Start early (when she is still a kitten,) slowly and gradually - you cannot do everything on day one or day four. On the first day, you maybe able to just touch her teeth with your fingers (if she lets you) and on day 2, she may just lick the toothpaste off your finger. You cannot force a cat to do anything against her wishes - you can only negotiate with her and come to an understanding. If you force her, you'll lose her respect. They are like, "You WAIT! I'll tell you when I'm ready to play with you". For instance, if you spray water on her (even for fun or because she climbed the kitchen counter), you will lose her TRUST because cats hate water.

I brush her teeth every single day with a cat toothbrush and cat toothpaste (do not use human toothpaste). I alternate these 2 brushes (you may also use a soft baby toothbrush):

Got her this FEANDREA SONGMICS 58” Multi-Level Plush Cat Tree with a hammock, condo, 2 levels of perches and several scratching posts/pillars and she just spends all day on it looking outside the window making friends with birds, chipmunks, walking dogs, etc. and also sleeps on it. This tree is the BEST thing that happened to her which is her default space. She quickly climbs up/down it like a chipmunk! It is a very premium velvety cat tree and I'm surprised they make such high quality plush stuff for cats. Seeing is believing - when you see it, touch it, feel it and assemble it, you'll know it is very special that is made with LOVE. Plus - this is built LARGE and meant for big cats and good for when the kitty grows up. Every other cat tree I've seen is built just for kittens and big cats just get squished in them and don't use them as much as this one. Remember, if you have a cat, it needs a cat tree to satisfy its natural climbing instincts. Don't skimp on the quality of cat tree - look no further and just get the best!

Omega Paws Cat Litter System for just $26 - I spend just 30 seconds a day to tilt this to one side and back to automatically gather all the clumped waste into its built-in tray, pull out the tray and toss the waste into a garbage bag - just 30 seconds a day without ever touching or scooping anything and Lulu has a super-clean litter box all the time! Higher end models costing over $600 work on the same mechanism but automatically with built-in sensors that clean right after the cat uses it and ideal for multi-cat scenario. For a single cat, this $26 system is more than adequate. Even if you have 2 cats, you could just buy 1 for each cat (many people do)!! Make sure you buy the revised/latest model (improvised and leak-proofed) in large size. Works great with Tidy Cats 100% Dust Free and 50% Lighter Clumping Litter. Watch the video by its inventor.

Brush the cat fur at least twice a week (everyday if long hair).

Use these once a week to clean the cat's fur (do not use wipes on her face or eyes and do not attempt to bathe a cat):

CHI Cleansing & Refreshing Wipes for Cats

Burt's Bees Waterless Shampoo

Clean cat's face, head and neck with wet paper towel every other day where it cannot reach to lick/groom itself.

Clip her nails and clean her ears once a week.

A scratch-post for her to scratch her nails (also saves your furniture):

She has a house-full of toys and entertainment . When I wake up in the morning, I see some toys lying on the kitchen floor, some under the bed, some in the lobby, some in the corners - she is playing with them all night and that puts a smile on my face. She goes nuts with catnip stuffed toys and catnip soap bubbles. It is said – a one-year-old kitten is developmentally equivalent in age and maturity of a 15-year-old human. This 7-month old baby is like a teenage girl already – who can stay home all day by herself without any adult supervision or help, whatsoever! And no sippy cups or diaper business!

Cat-proofing a house:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=household+hazards+for+cats

The best toy for a cat is a string on a stick with a feather and small bell (light-weight as they don't like heavy string toys that could hit and harm them) and they go bonkers over it. Also super easy easy to use is a Laser Chaser.

Cats are always serious and curious - they think they are wise and we humans are silly. But figure this - if they are wise, how come they go crazy over a string and a laser light which are not real toys?? Yeah, right!

As a pet parent, raising a pet comes with responsibilities. For the way Indians are raised (and also some baseless superstitions around cats), most of us are wired to prefer dogs. I look at her Angel Face when I get up in the morning and I give her a hug before heading out - I have no superstitions. Give cats a try and see how easy they are to care for and how much fun they are. We have already followed most of what Westerners have done for ages. Cats are one thing most of us haven't tried yet. Cats are smaller, cuddly, adorable, funny, very playful, independent and always squeaky clean! They even bury their waste (poop and urine) after themselves instinctively to protect themselves from predators finding them from scent! They are so easy to care for. No wonder they RULE the Internet for a reason. Because they are independent and wise, they don't want to be someone's dog - you cannot walk a cat like a dog - a cat walks her own ways, curiously observing the surroundings - you get very little walking with her.

What can I say? Lulu is the Princess of our Little Kingdom. She follows me wherever I go like "Mary's Little Lamb". When I'm in the kitchen, she is right in the kitchen and it feels beautiful there is a little girl in the kitchen. Whenever I open the bathroom door, she comes racing, barges into it like it's HER bathroom (Excuse me, young lady! Can I have some privacy? Do you mind?? Please...), climbs the bathtub and starts curiously staring at everything - she thinks the tub, taps, curtain, sink, mirror, potty, flush, etc in the bathroom are intriguing and she won't get bored of looking at them ever after a million times. Or, maybe she thinks I'm hiding some skeletons in the bathroom that she could unearth someday, LOL 😳
