what is hinduism

It's hard to confine it to few sentences and words or even paragraphs. As per my understanding it is a religion suitable for the most efficient functioning of a society.

It would be rather easier to point out differences between abrahamic religions and Hinduism.

all religions are at some level a way of life man. its not specific to hinduism.

Hinduism is basically watered down brahminism from the vedic age mixed with some buddhist elements (like veggie stuff).

it was imposed on a wide population in India through the kings and his brahmin advisors, and later through the bhakti movement in the 17th century.

ofcourse buddhism was also imposed by kings who patronised it.

if hindus are proud that they have many gods, it is because the local gods were appropriated by brahmins and woven into tales to create a few myths. even brahmins have a complex history in that there were always new groups claiming to be brahmins in every era. that is how hindus got their diversity. it wasn't through some grand liberal design.

hinduism has in fact destroyed local cultures, but ofcourse we can put that down to hinduism being more appealing to the inhabitants (added with political patronage of the king and the upper class), compared to the local dieties. that's why its funny when hindus today cry about proselytization from other religions.

what did you think hindus did? they did exactly what christians are doing now to spread hinduism. they were in fact brutal to dalits and certain shudra castes while doing it too.

first nuvvu chaduvu emi cheppinchaali anukuntunnavo. vedas, puranas or whatever. taravatha saramsam cheppinchu.

try to avoid saying hinduism is the best or to glorify the hierarchy that is liberally described in such texts.

hinduism has a lot of cool stories, that can be taught to kids.

Hinduism is not religion, its believe.

hinduism is brahminism. that is the religion. since they don't want to share that title with others, they used the word 'hindu'.

hindus follow what brahmins tell them to follow. they are the gate keepers of hinduism. this truth cannot be told to kids, if you are queasy about it.

you can simply say hinduism is just a collection of different faiths that are followed by people who used to live beyond the Indus river. but its not the truth. hinduism has a structure, and that is brahminism. Its not some freeform anyone can fill in with their favourite god, and lay claim to being a Hindu.

the problem is that some people keep calling themselves 'brahmin', even in this day and age, when they have their own caste name. and feel bad when someone calls out brahminism.

just call yourself by your caste name. why the title brahmin, when you are not a servant of god, or a person who has attained brahman state. its silly.
