Only detached sophistry, that has became hallmark of maniratnam now. This is the film where that maniratnam transition happened. His movies became dry and full of technical finesse and without any substance. Its like Maniratnam transitioned to making movies for an international audience, and not his own people. In a way, that detached sophistry was the reason the movie even released. If Jayalalitha was in power, no cuts and all, the movie would straight up gone to gather dust in some shelf and only be shown around in film festivals. Karunanidhi personally doesn't give a fcuk what people talk about him, but he has an organization to protect from the evil Delhi. Maniratnam was lucky that most people got bored and walked off midway into the movie, or he would have had serious attacks on him by DMK chamchas. lol.
