Tamilnadu airports are one of the worst in the country . Their state govt doesn't care about aviation because most people don't use it and it's completely under central govt rules

I think TN govt is trying to develop a second airport for Chennai with TIDCO acting as the nodal agency for developing it.

But its obviously not feasible since the state govt has been dragging its feet for more than a decade on this, while AAI is upgrading the existing one with new terminals that can increase capacity.

Fuckers dragged it too long , they should have built the airport in gummidipoondi long ago when land wasn't a big issue

But Internal fighting shelved that plan and shifted to Sri perambadur , now the land acquisition is not feasible there

Any new airport would be located 70-80 km away from Chennai Central if they start the process right now

That's where an airport near sullurupeta could have captured the air traffic from thiruvallur industries , north Chennai.

land acquisition won't be a big issue in andhra , it would take atleast a decade for new Chennai airport to materialise

the current status is that AAI has recommended to build it in Parandur in kancheepuram.. the feasibility report is already out there since 2019.

TIDCO is insisting on mamandur in tiruvannamalai, I think for kickbacks from a private developer who has identified that land.  finally last Nov State govt suddenly dropped Mamandur as potential location. and are still looking at where to build. lol.

I think the airport is going to finally come at Parandur, even though the state govt revived the discussion on this today with a report about how the SG is considered four sites. haha

Exactly what I said ,

parandur to Chennai is around 70 km  and not so good road access

Chennai to sullurupeta is around 80km with NH16 access

if TN builds a brand new fancy airport it would have high user fees to recover costs

A domestic airport near sullurupeta would serve large part of the city with little to no user fee.

On top of that , the airport can service the logistical needs of Chennai manufacturing sector

Its also only 50km farther than dagadarthi to Nellore city

What exactly is the problem with Chennai airport ?

Any attempts made to privatize this airport ?

Land bagane vuntadi kada, enough to operate as a main airport for the city..

One of the busiest airport but why is it not being privatized ? State govt hurdles vunaya emana ? State govt ki emana share or one ownership rights vunaya ?

State govt refused privatization of this airport when it was offered early 2000s. Land undha ante.. they built a second runway, but it was built right across a river, since any other direction would require acquiring land where there's already low density housing.

If you watch that first Ranjith movie - Attakathi. It is about people living in that area, though movie has nothing to do with the airport. Its quite rural in look.

Its not being privatized now because there's no scope for expansion, once the second ongoing terminal expansion completes, the airport is done. They didn't even have enough land to build a parallel runway for the new terminal that opened in 2018.

there's no problem. its quite adequate as of now. Last time I checked - some 3 months ago, it had upgraded washrooms even. that's all I care about.

I only wish our bus stand is maintained similarly.

how many flights land/takeoff from private airports like bangalore/hyderabad per hour?

about 300-500? that's about 15-20 per hour, on both runways. Chennai does about the same in a single runway plus a second one which is quite limited.

efficiency means landing atleast 1000 a day no? but there's a serious lack of demand for air travel to aim for that level of efficiency. which makes privatization of airports in India simply another avenue to make connected people rich, since AAI can quite easily serve the needs for the current demand.

Can privatization make Chennai airport utilize its current capacity efficiently? It can, if privatization is done carefully pitting one operator against the other in a carefully regulated way. Something that is not gonna happen.

even the busiest airport in India - Delhi airport lands only about 1000 flights per day spread across 3 runways. I think one of them is parallel.

that's the level of demand we have in India for air travel.

there's a lot of potential with the current airport itself. Chennai won't even need a second one.

especially if defense ministry gives up the pallavaram army camp that is close to the airport.

a third parallel runway can be built with a midfield terminal for accommodating flights that land. There's still a problem of transporting people from the tarmac to the gate, but its a smaller problem compared to the Land Acquisition headache.
