IPL 2018: Mark Wood hopes to be a match-winner by playing alongside MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo

"It will be an immensely proud moment for me to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL," Wood was quoted as saying by the CSK website.

Chennai: England paceman Mark Wood on Friday said he wants to pick the brains of former India skipper MS Dhoni and West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo and emerge as a "match winner" for Chennai Super Kings during next month's Indian Premier League.

"I think learning to cope in pressure situations can only help. And picking the brains of some of the legends of the game. MS Dhoni as my captain will provide a great insight and I would love to work with (Dwayne) Bravo and develop my slower ball," said the 28-year-old Wood.

Wood said he was "immensely proud" to get to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.

"It will be an immensely proud moment for me to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL," Wood was quoted as saying by the CSK website.

"Not only is the IPL a great competition but I also get to play for the best team! Who wouldn't want that? I'm very lucky and hope to be a match-winner for my team," he added.

The highly-rated Durham bowler, who regularly clocks 140kmph, said he wants to thrive under pressure.

"Of course there is pressure but that's what really switches you on," the English cricketer said, speaking about the expectation of spearheading CSKs bowling attack along with the latest South African pace bowling star Lungi Ngidi and Shardul Thakur.

"It might not go your way every time but if you give everything youve got and commit to every ball, then, hopefully, you come out on the right side more often than not," Wood said.

CSK's CEO KS Viswanathan said the team was looking at someone who could regularly bowl at 140kmph and head coach Stephen Fleming felt Wood could be a good option and do well in the IPL.

"We were looking at someone who can regularly bowl at 140kmph and (head coach) Stephen Fleming felt Wood was a good option. We feel he has the potential to do well in the IPL," Viswanathan added.

Dinesh Karthik to captain KKR in IPL 2018

comme

Dinesh Karthik will lead the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League 2018. It will be his first season with them, having been bought at the auction in February for INR 7.4 crores (approx USD 1.1 million). An old hand, Robin Uthappa, who was also among the top contenders for the job, has been appointed vice-captain.

Venkatesh Prasad joins Kings XI Punjab

Venkatesh Prasad was announced as Kings XI Punjab's bowling coach on Sunday. He had recently quit as chairman of India's junior selection panel in anticipation of picking up a job at the IPL and keeping both positions would have left him on the wrong side of the conflict of interest rules as advocated by the Lodha panel.

Prasad was the bowling coach at Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 during the first season of the IPL. He then took the same role at Chennai Super Kings from 2009-10 before moving back to Royal Challengers between 2011-13.

Karthik, 32, has been part of the IPL since its inception in 2008, and he has played for five different teams - Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and most recently Gujarat Lions. He has also been stand-in captain for some of those teams, and has long been part of the leadership group with his home state Tamil Nadu.

"I think the thing that stood out is that DK is at the age now in his career where he's got the best years of his career in front of him," assistant coach Simon Katich told Star Sports. "He's been involved in the IPL for 10 years. He's got a fantastic domestic record captaining Tamil Nadu in the T20 tournament there. I think he's got a 72% win-rate which is outstanding as a T20 skipper."

Karthik takes over from Gautam Gambhir, who is the Knight Riders' leading run-scorer and took them to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Venky Mysore, the CEO of the franchise, said they were keen to retain Gambhir for the 2018 season as well but the player had asked for a fresh start. It appears KKR are also chasing the same by putting a man who is yet to make his debut for them as their captain.

"The team that Gambhir led in the last seven years, I think he's done a fabulous job. "Karthik said. "He's left a sort of legacy which is the kind of thing I'd like to do, where you leave the team in good hands, and you take a team that was probably doing well and take it to a different level altogether. I would definitely like to be a part of that journey."

Knight Riders went all out to pick up the lynch pins of India's Under-19 World Cup winning squad - Shubman Gill (approx USD 281,000), Kamlesh Nagarkoti(approx USD 500,000) and Shivam Mavi (approx USD 468,000) - and Karthik was keen to see how they fare in the IPL. "It's a very young side. There are few very interesting talents from the India Under-19s that we've picked up. I'm really looking forward to meeting them, interacting with them and getting the best out of them."

Uthappa, the 32-year old who has played for the Knight Riders since 2014, might have missed out on the chance to lead them on account of limited captaincy experience. He has been at the helm of eight T20 matches, whereas Karthik's corresponding figure is 18.

"To come in at this role is really exciting for me," Uthappa said. "I've been able to add value to the team in the past in different scenarios in different forms. This gives me a more direct impact within the decision-making group so I hope to be adding the kind of value that bring us championships.

"I'm sure all of Kolkata will be right behind DK, as will I and as will the rest of the team. I'm going to be available to DK anytime he needs me, always ready to share my inputs. DK and I have known each other since our Under-17 days, so looking forward to working with him"

The 11th season of the IPL begins on April 7 in Mumbai.

  • The 2018 Indian Premier League opening ceremony has been postponed by a day from April 6 to April 7, and according to a Board of Control for Cricket in India functionary, it has been done at the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators’ (CoA) behest.

The venue, too, has been moved from the Cricket Club of India (CCI) to Wankhede Stadium, with the budget being reduced by as much as Rs 20 crore.

The 11th edition of the cash-rich league kicks off on April 7 at Wankhede, with a fixture between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, the two-time champions, who are returning to the league after serving a two-year suspension. The inaugural ceremony will be held before the start of the match. “Earlier the opening ceremony was scheduled for April 6 at the Cricket Club of India. Now it has been decided by the CoA that it will happen on April 7 at Wankhede before the 2018 IPL opener,” a BCCI functionary told The Indian Express

The call to reduce the budget by Rs 20 crore, too, was taken by the CoA. “Earlier the budget for the opening ceremony was Rs 50 crore (approved by the IPL governing council), now it has been reduced to Rs 30 crore. This call, too, has been taken by the CoA,” he said.

The schedule for the rest of the tournament, though, remains unchanged. The final, as scheduled earlier, will be played on May 27 at the Wankhede.

IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir Named Delhi Daredevils Captain

New Delhi: Left-hand batsman Gautam Gambhir who led IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders for seven years, has now been named the skipper of Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming season of the tournament. The announcement was made during an event on Wednesday, by DD CEO Hemant Dua.

Gambhir was associated with the Delhi franchise till 2010, and thereafter joined KKR, where he led them to two titles in 2012, 2014 respectively. Delighted to be chosen as the skipper for the team, Gambhir said, “It is a huge honour to once again captain DD. To get this responsibility is a way for me to give back to the sport in the city. I firmly believe that with the players currently involved we have the makings of a very good side. The potential of this group of players is immense and it is now up to us to turn that potential into consistent performances. It is also going to be great to work in unison with Ricky, an absolute champion himself.”

The southpaw batsman was picked by the Delhi outfit for Rs 2.8 crore, and till now has scored 4,132 runs from 148 matches in his IPL career. Asked whether he eyes IPL as a stepping stone to comeback in the Indian team, Gambhir said, “I’m more excited than I have ever been.”

“You don’t play a tournament to make a comeback, you play to win the tournament..every time before the IPL I am asked this question. But a leader plays to help his side win. Not for a personal comeback.”

Speaking about the Gambhir's appointment, head coach Ricky Ponting said: “Gauti has been a leader for a very long time. He has always proven himself to be one of the top leaders during his stint with other sides in the IPL. He has a big personality, but it is the drive behind the outward confidence which I think will inspire the rest of the team. He has the respect of the dressing room and the franchise is proud to have him as our captain. I would like to congratulate him on the appointment and wish him, all the very best."

Delhi Daredevils Squad: Gautam Gambhir (C), Jason Roy, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Manjot Kalra, Colin Munro, Rishabh Pant, Naman Ojha, Chris Morris, Glenn Maxwell, Vijay Shankar, Daniel Christian, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Jayant Yadav, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammad Shami, Trent Boult, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Sayan Ghosh, Amit Mishra, Shahbaz Nadeem, Rahul Tewatia, Abhishek Sharma, Sandeep Lamichhane.
