The Indian Premier League auction for the 2019 edition will be held in Jaipur on December 18, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Monday (December 3). A total of 70 slots are available with a maximum of 50 Indian players and 20 overseas players allowed to be picked.

Kings XI Punjab have the maximum amount left in the purse having released 11 players from their pool. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings can buy just two players - having retained 23 players - and have Rs. 8.4 crores in their bank. Apart from KXIP, Delhi Daredevils, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders are also expected to be on a shopping spree.

Mumbai Indians will look to fill just one overseas spot while Knight Riders can buy the maximum number of overseas players - five. Sunrisers Hyderabad have Rs. 9.70 crores in their purse and have three Indian slots and two overseas slots to fill.

The auction is expected to be a short one with just one day designated for the event.

IPL 2019 could see a drop in viewership ratings; trimmed version could help retain viewer & player interest

Considering that all major teams would want their key players to be fit for ICC World Cup 2019, the Indian Premier League might (IPL) 2019 might lose its sheen.

Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma
It remains to be seen whether key Indian players will play all matches in IPL 2019

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has only grown in popularity since its inception in 2008. Its brand value has increased each season, despite the suspension and eventual return of two franchises and ban on a few 'outlaws'. IPL has seen corruption, but never a decline in its stature.

Over the years, Indians have been satisfying their entertainment quotient through the IPL every summer.  But to organise a full-fledged franchise T20 cricket tournament only a month ahead of the ODI World Cup makes little sense for many reasons.

Little to no gap between the World Cup and IPL

The quadrennial event begins on May 30 in England and Wales. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed India's first match from 2nd June to 5th June because the Lodha committee guidelines ask for at least a gap of 15 days between World Cup and the IPL.

If the T20 extravaganza is scheduled to be held in April and May, as is the case every year, it may miss the services of several star players.  Any international cricketer playing the World Cup will be reluctant to play a bootless T20 tournament and risk an injury ahead of the WC. Their respective boards may also show them the red light.

Chennai Super Kings without MS Dhoni or Royal Challengers without Virat Kohli will disengage the fans from the annual spectacle. Cake without cream may not sell much – the television viewership and sale of tickets will likely see a drop.

General Election next year

There have been talks about IPL 2019 moving out of India due to general elections, during which chances of public violence are high. Twice in the past, the league has been played overseas for the same reason. In 2009, the IPL was played in South Africa and in 2014, a part of it was played in UAE.

Recent reports suggest that the Indian board is planning to shift the tournament to UAE in 2019. Less difference in the time zones between India and the Arab country makes it the first choice for an alternate venue.

Due to the lack of interest from locals, Pakistan Super League has seen empty stadiums during its UAE matches. Same can be the case with India. IPL may see much lesser crowd overseas, which will affect the revenue of the franchises.

IPL 12 may lead to an overkill

The last two times when IPL and the World Cup were played in the same year, the latter preceded the schedule of the former. In 2011 and 2015, the World Cup was played ahead of the IPL.

While the viewership in the 2015 edition was decent, IPL 2011 registered the lowest viewership ratings since 2008. This was because India had won the World Cup and after achieving that huge a feat, the IPL hardly mattered. But another reason was cricket fatigue. There was a gap of only one week between India’s World Cup win and the IPL. Too much of cricket led to exhaustion of viewer interest.

This time around, the IPL will be played before the World Cup, with a gap of not more than two weeks between the two. With fifty days of the IPL and then the World Cup, viewers may have their heads fired.

Too much of emphasis is being given to the World Cup already – by cricketers and the media. The excitement for the marquee event is on an all-time high.  IPL 2019, in this case, might just be a rock which will sink under the zest and quest of cricket’s biggest trophy.

So, what’s the solution?

Only a few days ago, a list of players was released by their respective IPL franchises for 2019. The date for the upcoming edition’s auctions has also been announced. Too many stakeholders are in and a lot of money is involved in the league now to even dare to consider its scrapping. That is not even a possibility, but here’s what the board can do to counter the above problems.

Reduce the length of the tournament. Instead of two months, the duration of IPL 2019 can be reduced to six weeks. The league can be divided into two groups, of which the top two teams qualify for the semi-finals, followed by the final. The risk of injuries will be less, the public interest will remain intact and the World Cup playing cricketers will enjoy competitive cricket without exhausting themselves.

Having an IPL ahead of the World Cup makes sense if only it is not a full-fledged one.

They Can make it a Group A & B group round Robin splitting 8 teams.. Top 2 from each group super 4 will play against other 3 then top 2 finals..

But looking at commercial perspective broadcasters and franchises may not be ready to trim it..
