Jayant Yadav traded to Mumbai Indians

Delhi Capitals have traded the offspin-bowling allrounder Jayant Yadav to Mumbai Indians. The 28-year old had been part of the Delhi franchise since 2015, and has four wickets from 10 matches in the tournament. With this trade, Mumbai have filled their quota of 25 players, while Delhi now have one place left.

Jayant recently captained the India Emerging Team in Sri Lanka, where he picked up 10 wickets in five games. He was instrumental in taking the side to the final, where he made an 85-ball 71 in a losing cause.

According to a BCCI release, the trading window remains open until 30 days before the start of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians (updated squad): Evin Lewis, Quinton de Kock, Anmolpreet Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Siddhesh Lad, Ishan Kishan, Aditya Tare, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Ben Cutting, Yuvraj Singh, Pankaj Jaiswal, Mayank Markande, Rahul Chahar, Anukul Roy, Jasprit Bumrah, Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan, Jason Behrendorff, Rasikh Salam, Lasith Malinga, Barinder Sran, Jayant Yadav

Yuvraj Singh being roped in by Mumbai Indians at IPL 2019 auction leaves Sourav Ganguly delighted

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly expressed his happiness on social media after Yuvraj Singh was bought by Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Mumbai bought Yuvraj for Rs 1 crore.

Fans of senior Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh had their hearts in their mouth as the Punjab cricketer went unsold in the first round at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 auction. Yuvraj, who scored just 65 runs in 8 matches in IPL 2018, was clearly not on the radar of the franchise owners. But Mumbai Indians, three-time IPL champions, threw a lifeline to Yuvraj, as they roped him in at his base price of Rs 1 crore as the event was heading towards its conclusion.

After Yuvraj was bought by Mumbai, team owner Akash Ambani revealed that they had been trying to buy him since ages. As wishes poured in from all corners, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who played a major role in shaping up Yuvraj’s career, took to Twitter to express his happiness. “Extremely happy to see Yuvraj singh picked by mumbai ...has been a great player for the country in shorter format ..good wishes to him @YUVSTRONG12," Ganguly wrote.

Yuvraj entered the auction after reducing his base price by Rs 1 crore. He was bought by Kings XI Punjab last season and was released ahead of the IPL 12 auction. After sealing the deal, Akash also opined that getting Yuvraj at 1 crore could be Mumbai Indians’ biggest steal in IPL auction history.

"To be honest, we had budgeted a lot more for Yuvraj and Malinga. At Rs one crore, a player like Yuvraj is probably a (biggest) steal of 12 (sic) years. He has won every trophy there is to be won," Ambani told the host broadcaster of the auction.

Yuvraj also took to Twitter to thank Mumbai Indians for buying him at the auction. “I am glad to be part of the @mipaltan family, looking forward for the season to begin. See u soon @ImRo45,” he wrote.

The IPL 2019 auction was another action-packed event where Jaydev Unadkat (sold to Rajasthan Royals for Rs 8. 4 cr) and Varun Chakravarty (sold to Kings XI Punjab for Rs 8. 4 cr) emerged as the most expensive Indian players. Among overseas buys, the in-form English all-rounder Sam Curran was bought by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 7.2 crore.

IPL 2019: BCCI mulls organising tournament overseas

IPL scheduling in fix

The schedule and venues of the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be finalised only after the schedule for the 2019 general elections are announced, even as the Indian cricket board is considering various scenarios and options for its cash-rich property.Among the four options, looked at by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), are advancing the event to March-April and holding it outside the country.

Going overseas again?

“While the effort is to keep the entire tourney in India, a lot will depend on the dates of the general elections,” accoding to a BCCI insider. The four options being considered by the board are: a caravan format — where all the teams travel together to all the venues — with 5-8 venues for a total of 60 matches; organising matches in smaller and non-conflicted stadiums within the country; holding some matches in India and rest in the UAE (like in 2014); and, holding the entire tourney in South Africa (like in 2009).

Can be held before LS polls

Initially, IPL 2019 was expected to be sandwiched between the elections and the ICC World Cup in England starting on May 30. But now there is a proposal to hold it earlier, before the elections.“We are also planning to advance the whole league to March-April, like in 2010 so that it can finish ahead of elections and there is a good rest period for the players before ICC World Cup,” one of the sources said.

When IPL went overseas

In the past, during the previous two general elections, IPL had to move out of India as the governments refused to provide security cover. While the entire tournament was shifted to South Africa in 2009, in 2014, the first 20 matches were held in the United Arab Emirates at three different stadiums in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, and the remaining matches were held in India from May 2, after the elections.

Sponsorship concerns loom large

“Sponsorship strategy is based on the teams’ home games,” said R Ramakrishnan, cofounder at sports marketing firm Baseline Ventures. “Various team sponsors sign the deals, not just to get logo visibility but also to have onground activations, including dealer engagements. If the league moves out of India, these activations can’t be done. Mostly the jersey sponsors get visibility in home matches, so first preference will always be the existing homeand-away format,” he said.BCCI will have to underwrite the loss of ticketing revenue to franchises in case the tournament moves out of India.
