Injured David Warner to undergo elbow surgery; IPL 2019 participation, Australia return not under threat

Australian cricketer David Warner is set to undergo elbow surgery after an injury he sustained in the 2019 Bangladesh Premier League during a fixture between Sylhet Sixers and Rangpur Raiders.

Having scored 6,4,4 while batting right-handed in the recent Bangladesh Premier League encounter between Sylhet Sixers and Rangpur Raiders, Australian cricketer David Warner is set to leave the tournament midway and head back home to undergo surgery on the elbow injury he sustained in the tournament. Warner looked in top form as he scored 61 runs off 36 balls for the Sixers as they defeated the Riders by 27 runs on Wednesday.

While Warner's franchise is yet to confirm the extent of injury to the left-handed opening batsman, a report in Fox Sports Australia claims that the injury will keep the tainted cricketer out of action for a period of 1 month. This means that he is out of the current BPL campaign but would be able to participate in the Indian Premier League season 12, unlike his former skipper Steve Smith, who is out with an elbow injury too but for a longer period.

"David has reported some pain in his right elbow. He will return to Australia on January 21 to be assessed, but is expected to play in the remaining BPL matches until his return. We will have a clearer understanding of the extent of the injury once he has been assessed," a Cricket Australia spokesperson said on Thursday.

Warner's case for Australia's ICC World Cup squad also remains clear for now, although the injury will rob him off match practice that he will need ahead of the showpiece event in England. The ball-tampering ban for both Smith and Warner will be concluded on March 29, making them eligible for selection in the Aussie team for all the assignments thereafter.

Smith, meanwhile, is set to be in a brace for a period of six weeks, having undergone elbow surgery. Afterwards, he will begin the rehabilitation process to put his case forward for a return in the Australian team for the World Cup.

Australia haven't been at their best in the absence of Warner and Smith. Under the captaincy of Aaron Finch in the limited overs fixtures, the team managed to draw the T20I series against India 1-1 and presently are level with the same margin in the ODI series against Virat Kohli's men, with the final match yet to be played. The duo's return in the team for the World Cup will be crucial for Australia as they look to defend the title they won back in 2015.

Rajasthan Royals could become the England fan's IPL team, claims Liam Livingstone

This year's IPL gets underway in March with a total of 11 English players in the mix, including Sam Curran, this season's most expensive overseas signing, who was picked up by King's XI Punjab for £800,000.

And while Livingstone's £50,000 fee wasn't quite in the same league, he feels his destination will give him a unique opportunity to thrive in the IPL spotlight, thanks to his longstanding friendships with the star names alongside him.

"I've played cricket with Ben at Cumbria and Jos at Lancs, so I think that will be the best part of it, some familiar faces," Livingstone told ESPNcricinfo. "It's great to be going to a franchise with guys I already know, so hopefully that'll help me settle into the environment a little quicker.

"It's obviously great to have the English contingent, and that'll give us a big following back home in England, for people who don't really support a team in the IPL, they'll see four English lads in one squad and take a lot of interest in that."

Livingstone's success at the auction was a welcome boost at the end of a tough year, which began with a call-up to England's Test squad in New Zealand, but was badly disrupted by a broken thumb, sustained during Lancashire's championship defeat against Yorkshire in July. That loss would prove a major factor in the club's relegation and Livingstone subsequently chose to step down from the captaincy.

And yet, in T20 cricket, Livingstone enjoyed a fine run of form at the top of Lancashire's order, blasting 318 runs in seven matches, including a 49-ball century against Derbyshire and a brilliant matchwinning 79 from 37 balls in a one-run Roses thriller at Old Trafford.

"It was a disappointing year but there were a few highlights as well, so it wasn't all doom and gloom," he said. "To average 45 at a strike-rate of 190 in T20 meant that, going into the winter, I knew there was a chance to be picked up in a few tournaments with that behind me."

So it proved, with a stint with Karachi Kings in the PSL looming large next month, before he heads straight to Jaipur for the start of the IPL on March 23.

"It's going to be a life experience, as well as an experience on the field, because you can't get that sort of big-game experience anywhere else in the world apart from international cricket. It is going to be a great learning curve."

Unsurprisingly, Livingstone's Lancashire team-mate Buttler was an especially keen advocate of the IPL when Livingstone was weighing up the pros and cons of putting himself forward for this season's auction.

In 2018, Buttler produced one of the storylines of the tournament when, after being promoted to open the Rajasthan innings, he responded with a run of five consecutive half-centuries, a vein of form that led directly to his England recall for the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's a fortnight later.

"Speaking to Jos, he always says it's one of the best things he's done in his career," Livingstone said. "This time last year, if you said that Jos would do what he's done in Test cricket, people would have said you were crazy, but that shows not only the level of skill Jos has got, but that, so long as your basics are in good order, you can temper what you do in T20, and use it in 50-over and Test cricket as well."

The same is clearly true of Stokes, who was MVP in the 2017 IPL while playing for Rising Pune Supergiant, and was recently singled out for praise by England head coach Trevor Bayliss, following his starring role in England's 3-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka.

None of which came as any surprise to Livingstone, who became accustomed to Stokes' exploits while playing age-group cricket in his native Cumbria.

"Ben was two years older than me so we used to travel around together," he said. "I was in the U13s and he was U15s. so we didn't play in the same team much, but we'd be playing our matches on different pitches, usually at a big public school, and if you wandered round, you'd usually find he was on about 140-odd."

Livingstone is realistic about his chances of breaking straight into a powerful Rajasthan squad, one that will also feature India's Ajinkya Rahane and Australia's former captain, Steve Smith, who will be returning to top-level cricket for the first time since his year-long ban for ball-tampering. But even if spends most of his stint warming a bench, he doesn't believe it will have been a wasted trip.

"I think that was one of the reasons I wanted to go into the auction, even though I'll miss part of the season with Lancs," he said. "The experience of being in the changing room with some of the best players in the world, and playing against them, and seeing how they operate from day to day, that was one of the attractions of going in.

"If I get the chance to play, I hope I can show people what I'm about," he said. "I would like to see myself as flexible and willing to try a few different positions. I'm just going out there with an open mind and, if I get the chance to do anything, hopefully I'll be ready to take it."

Prithvi Shaw, Team India's young batting star, was ruled out of the recently-concluded Australia series with ligament injury. The 19-year-old hurt his ankle while trying to take a catch against Cricket Australia XI in December and had to be carried off at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Shaw's absence did create a top-order headache for Virat Kohli as Murali Vijay and KL Rahul failed to give solid starts to India during the Test series that the visitors won 2-1. However, now the good news is that Shaw believes that he will fit before the Indian Premier League (IPL) season this year. "I will be fit before the Indian Premier League and I am trying hard to reach full fitness. I am working on my ankle as well as on my upper body," Shaw was quoted as saying by India TV.

The Mumbai batsman, while attempting to catch a big hit from opener Max Bryant, landed awkwardly with his left ankle bending 90-degrees inwards underneath him, and he tumbled to the ground and over the rope.

"It was an unfortunate incident and you can't really do anything about that. It was my wish to play in the challenging conditions in Australia. I love the bounce there. But unfortunately, I suffered a leg injury. But that's okay, I am very happy that India won the Test series. It can't get better than this," Shaw added.

Prithvi Shaw, who scored a sparkling century on debut in the first Test against the Windies in October, is currently regaining fitness at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Shaw plays for Delhi Capitals (earlier Delhi Daredevils) in the IPL.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan could very soon be adding the star factor in the Indian Premier League’s franchise Rajasthan Royals as a report in The Times of Indiasuggests that the Bachchan family has shown interest in the T20 league. As per the report, they first approached Chennai Super Kings and later approached one-time champion Rajasthan Royals. “Yes, Abhishek (Bachchan) met Manoj Badale in London some time ago,” Ramesh Pulapaka, CEO of AB Corp, was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Last week, a report in PTI had also suggested the owners of the franchise are looking forward to selling half of their stakes in the franchise and Bachchans’ interest in the getting stakes in the franchise further confirms the news. Should Bachchans purchase a part of Rajasthan Royals, they will become second Bollywood celebrity to buy a stake in this franchise. Earlier, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra held stakes in the franchise before giving them up in 2015.

Presently, the Bachchan family is associated with Indian Super League and Pro Kabaddi league. They have their share in ISL franchise Chennaiyin FC while Abhishek Bachchan is the owner of PKL franchise Jaipur Pink Panthers. With other parties also interested for a stake in Rajasthan Royals, it remains to be seen how things go down and if the Bachchan family buys the stake in the franchise.

Rajasthan Royals is one of the franchises that has been part of the T20 league right from the inception. Based out of Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals emerged out as the champion of the T20 league in the inaugural edition of the league.

In 2015, the franchise suspended for a period of two years along with Chennai Super Kings and both the franchises made their comebacks in IPL 2018, also qualifying for the second round. CSK went onto the IPL trophy for the third time.

Will suspended Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul play IPL 2019?

KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were suspended by BCCI on Friday. For now, it is not yet clear whether they will be eligible to play the 12th season of Indian Premier League or not.

Will Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul play the 12th season of Indian Premier League (IPL)? This is the biggest question that is making the air after the suspension of the duo by BCCI. The release of the board clearly mentions that they will not be allowed to play in any tournament authorised by it, ICC or any state association. This also includes IPL and as of now, the participation of the duo in the T20 league remains under cloud.

This is due to the fact that a set timeline for the inquiry into the case of Pandya and Rahul has not been set and it remains to be seen how much time will the committee take to deliver a judgement on the two players. It can take a week, two weeks or even a month.

After the judgement of the committee, both the players will have to serve the bans or pay fines or whatever the committee decides. Since the IPL starts on March 23, a ban for two months or so can see them miss the full duration of the IPL or a part of the T20 league. Their IPL future solely depends on the committee; the time it will take to announce the decision and the punishment which it will impose on the two cricketers.

Pandya was retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of 2018 IPL auction for a huge amount of Rs 11 Crore. He scored 260 runs and scalped 18 wickets in the previous season. KL Rahul was purchased by Kings XI Punjab for a sky-rocketing amount of Rs 11 Crore. He repaid the faith shown on him and shone with the bat, scoring 659 runs in the T20 league. It also saw him make his comeback to the ODI side and he has been with the team since then.

If they are ruled out of the league, it will come as a big blow for the franchises of the two players. For now, they are returning back from Australia and will wait for a decision of the committee.
