IPL auction to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru

The full player list for the auction is expected to be finalised by mid-January

The IPL mega-auction will be a two-day affair, on February 12 and 13, and will be held in Bengaluru ahead of the 2022 season, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. The full player list for the auction is expected to be finalised by mid-January, after the two new franchises have made their picks of up to three players from the auction pool.

While the final date for the new teams to make their picks was December 25, it is now all but certain that this deadline will be deferred. The BCCI is yet to officially appoint the ownership of the Ahmedabad franchise to CVC Capital Partners, who had INR 5625 crore (USD 750 million approx) to acquire the franchise in October.

The BCCI is still doing its due diligence on the company, looking into compliance issues having to do with CVC's ties with two betting companies, in Italy and in Brazil. The BCCI is seeking the counsel of various experts, including a former High Court judge, before they can formally appoint them owners. This process is likely to push the deadline.

The eight existing IPL teams had already completed their retention process on November 30, and will be going into to the pool to rebuild their sides on February 12. Like the existing teams, the new franchises will also start with a purse of INR 90 crore (US$12 million approx.) to make offers for up to three players before the mega-auction. Their purse on auction day will depend on how many players they end up drafting pre-auction.

Tata Group replaces Vivo as IPL title sponsors for 2022 and 2023 seasons

IPL governing council provides letters of intent to the two new IPL teams after a delay.

A year after returning as the title sponsors of the IPL, following a suspension, Vivo has stepped away from the deal and Tata Group, the Indian business conglomerate, has stepped in. The Tata Group, which has varied business interests both in India and overseas, will be the IPL title sponsors for the next two seasons (2022 and 2023), after the IPL governing council gave the approvals on Tuesday.

The governing council has also finally provided the letters of intent to the two new IPL teams - based in Lucknow and in Ahmedabad - which now have the ownership rights to operate the franchises they paid record sums to buy last October.

In the wake of the military clashes at the India-China border in June 2020, BCCI decided to sever ties with Vivo, a Chinese mobile and technology company. Vivo had bagged the title sponsorship rights for the period of 2017 to 2022 for approximately US$ 341 million, as an extension of its two-year association from 2015.

But, for the 2020 season, BCCI turned to Dream XI, the gaming company, as an interim replacement for Vivo. However, Vivo made a comeback ahead of the 2021 season. At the time, according to a PTI report, the company was given a "one year concession" since it had missed the 2020 season.

Why the delay in clearing CVC?
On October 25, CVC Capital, a major global private equity fund, bid nearly US$ 750 million to buy the rights to own the Ahmedabad franchise. It was the second-highest bid, only behind that of the RP Sanjeev Goenka Group, which bid nearly US$940 million to bag the rights for the Lucknow franchise. Both the new teams were originally asked by the IPL to buy a maximum of three players by December 25. However, the entire process was stalled after the BCCI decided not give the letter of intent to CVC when it emerged that the company has investments in two betting companies overseas.

With gambling being illegal in India, the BCCI appointed a group of legal experts before it could clear CVC. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the BCCI gave the nod after it established that the IPL investment comes from CVC's Asian funds, and there is no direct or indirect link with the betting companies CVC owns, as those investments come from its overseas funds.

Both the new franchises now have about ten days to finalise the list players they want before the IPL finalises the auction pool. The auction is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.

Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill set to join Ahmedabad franchise

Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten to join coaching staff; Vikram Solanki set to be team director.

Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill are set to be a part of the Ahmedabad franchise for the upcoming IPL season.

The Ahmedabad franchise, which was bought last October by CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pte Ltd), has also finalised its coaching staff - they will be led by former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra, and former South Africa batter and head coach Gary Kirsten. Former England batter Vikram Solanki, who is currently Surrey's head coach, will be the team director.

This is the second IPL franchise where the trio of Nehra, Kirsten and Solanki will work together: the previous instance was at Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Ahmedabad and Lucknow, the two new teams in the IPL, are yet to disclose the players they have bought but the deadline for doing so is fast approaching: January 22. Both teams were given the same purse - INR 90 crore - as the existing eight franchises. However, unlike the other teams, which could retain four players, the two new ones can buy a maximum of three players with the overseas slot limited to one.

While the IPL has set INR 15 crore, INR 11 crore and INR 7 crore for franchises retaining three players, ESPNcricinfo has learned that Ahmedabad have decided to pay both Hardik and Rashid the same amount - INR 15 crore. It is also learnt that Hardik is likely to take charge as Ahmedabad captain, a first experience for the allrounder in the IPL. The third player - Gill - will be paid INR 7 crore.

This is the first time Hardik and Rashid will play for the same franchise in the IPL, having previously represented Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. Hardik's rise, since he was bought as an uncapped player for a mere INR 10 lakh in 2015, has been exponential. By 2018, he had established himself as the best allrounder in India and Mumbai duly retained him as their second pick at the auction that year, paying INR 11 crore. In the next two seasons, Hardik scored 762 runs and took 32 wickets in 29 games. He is a four-time title-winner: 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Hardik struggled with fitness issues over the last two IPLs, and did not bowl at all in this period. His batting, too, hasn't been as effective as before. That forced Mumbai to look in a different direction as they retained the in-from Suryakumar Yadav, who has proven he can bat and accelerate at any position. Hardik is currently focussing on regaining complete fitness and has not been part of any of the Indian white-ball squads since the T20 World Cup.

As for Rashid, the Afghanistan legspinner became a big talking point immediately after Sunrisers decided to retain Kane Williamson, who will be full-time captain from IPL 2022, along with the uncapped Jammu & Kashmir pairing of Abdul Samad and Umran Malik

In 2017, Sunrisers bought Rashid for INR 4 crore and, a year later, they retained him for INR 9 crore. Remarkably, Rashid featured in all 76 matches played by Sunrisers since his debut, picking up 93 wickets at an economy rate of 6.33. Only Jasprit Bumrah has taken more wickets (104) than Rashid in the last five IPL seasons.

Both social media and rival teams were aghast that Rashid had not being retained in 2022. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that while Sunrisers did want to keep Rashid, they told him that he would be their second pick behind Williamson. The talks got derailed thereafter, which freed Rashid to weigh up his options, including going into the auction.

For Gill, this will be his second team in the IPL having been picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 auction for INR 1.8 crore. The 22-year old, who has already played 10 Tests and three ODIs, has been earmarked as one of the brightest young talents to dominate this decade, and at one point was even looked upon as a future leader by the Knight Riders. However, the Knight Riders had several other options when it came to retention and Gill had to be left out.

Stokes joins Root in opting out of IPL 2022 auction

England captain and vice-captain will instead play the County Championship in preparation for a Test series against New Zealand

Ben Stokes has joined Joe Root in deciding not to enter the auction for the 2022 edition of the IPL, with England's Test captain and vice-captain instead set to prepare for the first Test of their home summer against New Zealand by playing in the County Championship.

Root said last week that he was weighing up whether or not to put his name forward for the auction for only the second time, after going unsold in 2018, and confirmed after the Hobart Test that he had opted against it.

"There's a lot that we need to do for this [Test] team, which deserves all of my energy," Root said. "I'll keep sacrificing as much as I can because I care so much about Test cricket in our country and trying to get us to where we want to be."

While Root, who has not played a T20 international since May 2019, was by no means guaranteed to win a contract at the auction, Stokes was significantly more likely to do so. He was the IPL's MVP in 2017 playing for Rising Pune Supergiant, and was the most expensive player at the 2018 mega auction, signing an INR 12.5 crore (£1.4 million approx.) deal with Rajasthan Royals.

ESPNcricinfo understands that franchises are not expecting Stokes to enter the auction before the deadline, which has been pushed back to January 20. Chris Silverwood, England's under-fire head coach, said he was "not 100 percent sure yet," whether Stokes would enter: "I've got an inclination but I'll let him tell you [the media]," he added.

Stokes broke a finger while dropping a catch in the deep in his only appearance in the 2021 IPL, an injury which limited his availability for the rest of the year and prompted a break from the game on mental-health grounds after he had attempted to make a comeback ahead of schedule.

He declared himself available for the 2021-22 Ashes series, but made 236 runs in 10 innings and took four wickets at 71.50, playing as a specialist batter in the final Test after injuring his side at the SCG. He is expected to be part of the squad for the three-match series against West Indies in the Caribbean in March, and England's schedule for the 2022 summer and 2022-23 is relentless for multi-format players.

Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings) and Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals) were the only Englishmen retained by their franchises before next month's mega auction in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13, with the Royals opting to retain Buttler - along with Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal - ahead of Stokes.

Dates for the 2022 IPL are yet to be confirmed but any England players selected for the first Test against New Zealand on June 2 are expected to be withdrawn before the knockout stages in order to prepare for the three-match series.

The ECB came in for widespread criticism last year after resting players who had recently returned from India for the two-Test series against New Zealand, though the series - which was not part of the World Test Championship - had been a late addition to the schedule, when players had already made guarantees about their availability for the IPL.

Mark Wood has entered the auction but said before the Hobart Test that he was weighing up whether or not to withdraw as he did in 2021, while Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope are both expected to put their names forward. Leading white-ball players like Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone and Eoin Morgan are among the names expected to be up for sale.

Jofra Archer, the 2020 MVP while playing for Royals, is unlikely to be part of the auction as he continues his rehab from a long-term elbow injury. A full list of players will be circulated to franchises at the end of this week.

Lucknow IPL franchise picks up Rahul, Stoinis and Bishnoi

Rahul also set to be captain of new franchise

KL Rahul, who will lead India in the ODI series in South Africa, is one of the three players who have been picked up by the Lucknow IPL franchise. Australian allrounder Marcus Stoinis and uncapped Indian legspinner Ravi Bishnoi are the other two.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the Lucknow franchise will go into the February auction with a purse of INR 60 crore - Rahul cost them INR 15 crore, Stoinis INR 11 crore, and Bishnoi INR 4 crore. It is learned that Rahul will also captain the franchise.

Rahul, 29, was the first acquisition for the Lucknow franchise, which was bought for INR 7090 crore (USD 940 million approx.) last October by the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group. One of the most consistent batters in the IPL since the 2018 IPL, Rahul had earlier told his previous franchise, Punjab Kings, where he was the captain the last two seasons, that he wanted a change, and was subsequently released by the management.

After starting his IPL career in 2013 when he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rahul went to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014, and was traded back to Royal Challengers in 2016 before the Punjab franchise (then Kings XI Punjab) paid INR 11 crore to buy him in the 2018 auction.

While the team has continued to fall short of expectations, Rahul's form has soared. After four seasons with Punjab, Rahul signed off as the leading run-getter for the team, scoring 2548 runs at an average of 56.62 including 25 fifty-plus scores - two of them hundreds - in just 55 innings.

Rahul scored 26.52% of Punjab's runs in that period, with season aggregates of 659, 593, 670 and 626 respectively between 2018 and 21, while averaging over 50 in each of those seasons. These are four of the five best season aggregates for any batter for the Punjab franchise in the IPL. However, his runs were also accompanied by a discussion about his strike rate, with several observers pointing out that Rahul's rate of scoring was sometimes counter-productive. His 670 runs in IPL 2020, in fact, came at a strike rate of 129.34, the lowest of anyone who has made 600-plus runs in an IPL season since the start of the tournament. Even the 626 runs he got in IPL 2021 were scored at a strike rate of 138.80, making Rahul the only batter with two sub-140 strike-rate tallies in a 600-plus IPL season.

As for Stoinis, Lucknow will be his fourth IPL franchise. He had started in 2015 with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), where he returned in 2020 after being bought for INR 4.8 crore. In the 27 matches he has played for the Capitals, 32-year-old Stoinis scored 441 runs at a strike rate of 142.71 and picked 15 wickets. In between, he had also turned out for Punjab and Royal Challengers.

Bishnoi, who impressed with his performance in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, where he finished as the leading wicket-taker, was one of the most sought-after uncapped players ahead of this year's IPL auction, with several franchises showing keen interest in him. That included Punjab, who had won the bidding war for him with Mumbai Indians in the 2020 auction to bag him for INR 2 crore.

Bishnoi then quickly became the lead spinner for Punjab, and took 12 wickets in 14 matches in his first season, and in 2021, he had 12 wickets from nine matches. Overall, he has an economy rate of 6.95.

The other new IPL franchise, based in Ahmedabad, named their three players of choice yesterday, picking up Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill. With both the new teams finalising their players, the cap set by the IPL, the focus shifts to the auction, which is scheduled for February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. The BCCI, however, is yet to formally inform the franchises about the dates and venue as it weighs in the pandemic situation across India.

IPL 2022 auction: Warner, Ashwin, Rabada, Bravo list maximum base price

A total of 1214 players have registered; Starc, Gayle, Archer and Stokes among notable absentees from the initial longlist

David Warner, the Player of the Tournament at the recent T20 World Cup, and his Australian team-mate Mitchell Marsh, who was the Player of the Match in the final, are among 49 players who have listed their base price at the maximum of INR 2 crore (US$ 269,000 approx.) for the 2022 mega IPL auction. Among the notable absentees from the initial longlist, seen by ESPNcricinfo, are Mitchell Starc, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Chris Gayle, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes.

Among the big names on the list, which includes 17 Indians and 32 overseas players, are R Aswhin, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan, Suresh Raina, Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, Steven Smith, Shakib Al Hasan, Mark Wood, Trent Boult, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada and Dwayne Bravo.

Overall, a total of 1214 cricketers, including 270 capped players, 312 uncapped players and 41 from Associate teams, have registered for the auction, and the list was sent to the ten franchises on Friday. A final, trimmed list will be prepared by the IPL governing council closer to the two-day auction, scheduled in Bengaluru for February 12 and 13, once the franchises send back their wishlists.

This will be the first mega auction conducted by the IPL since 2018, when the tournament featured eight teams. This auction, there are two more teams after the IPL sold two new franchises - to be based in Lucknow and in Ahmedabad - last October for record sums. The ten franchises have already spent nearly INR 338 crore (US$ 45 million approx.) to retain and acquire 33 players. Most of the franchises will enter the auction with significant money to spend in order to compile a fresh squad, but the likes of Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals will have a swollen purse.

While experience is a valuable commodity in the IPL, at mega auctions, franchises tend to invest in the young players who can help build the teams for the future. No surprise then, that the likes Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel and even the emerging West Indies allrounder Odean Smith, have not been shy of marking their reserve price in the highest bracket. Padikkal, who made his India debut last year in Sri Lanka, has excelled for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who had picked him up at the base price of INR 20 lakh (US$ 27,000 approx.) in 2020. With his fluent technique coupled with an aggressive mindset, long levers - and an IPL century to his name - Padikkal has managed to impress not just Virat Kohli but even the likes of Sunil Gavaskar.

Harshal, who was traded by Delhi Capitals to Royal Challengers ahead of the 2021 IPL, finished last season as the highest wicket-taker with 32 strikes. Harshal opted to move to the auction this time, though, confident about attracting buyers with his ability to bowl both with the new ball as well as at the death, where he has made the most impact with his clever changes of pace.

Smith, meanwhile, is a complete unknown in the IPL. But those who have seen the 25-year-old from Jamaica play, believe Smith has the potential to fulfil his desire of being the next Andre Russell. Smith can not just deliver serious pace, but has proved in tournaments like the T10 that he can make impactful cameos with the bat.

Batter Shahrukh Khan, who is likely to get a big bid, and even rejected an offer from his previous franchise Punjab Kings, has put his base price at the minimum of INR 20 lakh. Shahrukh, a tall and strong power-hitter, is known for his lower-order finishing skills and had been paid INR 5.25 crore (US$ 700,000 approx.) in the 2021 auction by Punjab. Another Indian uncapped player who has listed himself at the lowest base price and is expected to attract significant offers is fast bowler Avesh Khan, who was bought by Delhi Capitals for INR 70 lakh (US$ 94,000 approx.) a couple of years ago and was the second-highest wicket-taker behind Harshal in the 2021 IPL.

Former India fast bowler Sreesanth, meanwhile, has put his name in the ring in the INR 50 lakh (US$ 67,000) category.

INR 1.5 crore bracket

Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, Aaron Finch, Chris Lynn, Nathan Lyon, Kane Richardson, Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan, Dawid Malan, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Tim Southee, Colin Ingram, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran.

INR 1 crore bracket

Piyush Chawla, Kedar Jadhav, Prasidh Krishna, T Natarajan, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Nitish Rana, Wriddhiman Saha, Kuldeep Yadav, Jayant Yadav, Mohammad Nabi, James Faulkner, Moises Henriques, Marnus Labuschagne, Riley Meredith, Josh Philippe, D'Arcy Short, Andrew Tye, Dan Lawrence, Liam Livingstone, Tymal Mills, Ollie Pope, Devon Conway, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Aiden Markram, Rilee Rossouw, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Wanindu Hasaranga, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford.
