Visakhapatnam may soon boast of an Akshardham temple

VISAKHAPATNAM: The land of Lord Varaha Narasimha Swamy may soon have Lord Swaminarayan's famed Akshardham temple, on the lines of the ones in Gandhinagar and Delhi, if the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and the Andhra Pradesh government have their way.

Known for its grandeur and marvelous architecture, the Akshardham temple, if it comes through, is sure to attract domestic and international tourists to the city in droves and give temple tourism in AP yet another booster.

According to sources, BAPS has already evinced interest in setting up the project on the outskirts of the Port City and the tourism department authorities have asked the Swaminarayan temple authorities for detailed requirements and estimates. The state government has already asked the Vizag district administration to identify land on the city outskirts for the project.

Confirming this, district collector Dr N Yuvaraj said: "The Swaminarayan Trust that has set up the Akshardham temples in Delhi and Gujarat has shown interest in building a similar temple in Vizag near Simhachalam temple. We are now trying to identify a suitable site somewhere near Simhachalam."

State HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said: "The Swaminarayan Trust has expressed interest in setting up their temple complex in my constituency . AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu too is very keen on this project. We have asked them to submit a detailed report on the land required, approximate ex penditure, the spir itual, humanitar ian and cultural activities that would be set up as part of the complex. Once they give us the detailed plan, we can get cracking on the project."

With state chief secretary I Y R Krishna Rao emphasizing on according top priority to the tourism and hospitality sector, the Vizag District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) too is mulling setting up spiritual and wellness centres around Simhachalam temple at par with Tirupati.

Divulging the other projects, Vizag district tourism information officer A Siri said the state's first botanical garden has been mooted at Tajingi near Lambasingi in Chintapalli mandal, apart from ropeway projects at Araku, Paderu and Rushikonda Hills. "The government has asked us to identify sites, prepare feasibility reports and estimates," Siri said.

"The proposed botanical garden project may require 500-1,000 acres of land. The state HRD minister and principal secretary of tourism are quite keen on it and have asked us to work out the details of the project. The state has no botanical garden and the 26-acre Padmapuram gardens at Araku were badly damaged due to cyclone Hudhud," he added.

Beach front recreational and water sports activities, beach resorts and sea cruise services have also been proposed from Vizag to Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Chennai via Kakinada.

Four projects lined up for launching in next few days are set to create required ecosystem to put Visakhapatnam on the world IT map.

Notwithstanding the dislocation cyclone Hudhud caused to the IT units, in the just concluded financial year the IT industry with HSBC, IBM, Wipro and Tech Mahindra as main players clocked a business of around Rs.1800 crore to Rs.2,000 crore.

Among the four projects, the bottlenecks with regard to land acquisition for Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (3E) – a R&D campus by Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering & Research (SAMEER) -- have been cleared. The boundary wall construction will begin within a week with the Revenue Department paying compensation of nearly Rs.65 lakh to the aggrieved farmers.

The joint venture between VUDA and Software Technology Parks of India is also moving in a positive direction after a long time for construction of a skyscraper at Siripuram for an incubation centre. VUDA’s equity will be in the form of 1.2 acres. STPI has Rs.16 crore at its disposal.

The building will be showcased as a domain specific innovation centre to attract investments in IT applications required for marine, power and petroleum sectors.

Signature tower

The third project is for finalisation of bids to take up construction of Signature Tower at Rushikonda. A twin tower will be built to make it a world-class iconic tower to showcase Visakhapatnam as a global IT hub.

The IT community is also excited over the identification of four acres near Sunrise Startup Village to launch expansion works.

The foundation stone for all the four projects will be laid in a month or so. An official of APIIC has toldThe Hindu that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will be invited to launch work on these projects one after the other.
