Reduction in viral load in patients treated with Hydroxychloroquine

Hydroxychloroquine, a Chloroquine derivative has been in news for some time as news reports suggested the medicine has proven useful in treating COVID-19 patients. Today, however, ICMR official confirmed to PTI that a reduction in viral load has been observed in patients who were treated with the medicine. Hydroxychloroquine has been used for years in the treatment of malaria, and it also effectively blocks the entry of many viruses into cells. However, its utility in treating COVID-19 was discovered after a small clinical trial conducted in Marseille, France. The results of the study had been released on 18 March.

However, it is important to note, despite the headway in obtaining a possible treatment, government officials and medical practitioners have advised against self-medicating with Hydroxychloroquine for coronavirus, or any related symptoms.
