Yeah sedentary life is a perfect ambience. Whereas Stress is a triggering factor. We need to address root cause first.
 

And slowly change the stroke prone ambience.

Heart is a muscle, you need to work out to build it and make it strong. 

Do a workout activity that's intense, atleast for 30 minutes 4 days a week. I would suggest getting into running, you can run 3 miles in 30 minutes do that atleast 3 ideally 4 times a week and your heart will be conditioned and stronger.

Also don't sit too long everyday, get a sit stand desk and alternate 1 hour of standing for every 1 hour of sitting to begin with. That way you will only sit 4 hours in an 8 hour work day at max, sit on the floor in meditation pose while watching TV instead of reclining on a sofa.

Correct, running is compulsory and it's not that hard to get into if you are younger than 40. Walking is better than nothing but doesn't do anything for heart health.
