Brazil’s corona virus tally crosses the 2 million as outbreak worsens

Brazil now has over 20 lakh corona virus cases as the rate of infection continues to worsen in the Jair Bolsonaro-led country. Cases are growing at an alarming pace in Brazil, which is the second worst-hit country after US in terms of registered cases. Ignoring the sharp spike in cases, President Bolsonaro has pressured local governments to lift restrictions to control the spread of the deadly virus.

US sees sharpest single-day rise of 77,000 corona virus cases

The United States, which is the worst-affected country in the world with over 3.5 million cases, has reported more than 77,217 new cases in last 24 hours. It also reported 969 deaths — the biggest jump since June 10. Florida, Carolina and Texas have all reported big single-day spikes in cases. As of now, more than 1.38 lakh Americans have died after they tested positive for the virus. The spike of over 77,000 cases surpasses the previous record set on Friday when cases rose by 69,070. While average cases reported per day in June was at 28,000, it increased to over 57,600 in July.

Antibody test passes first major trials in UK with 98.6% accuracy: Report

British ministers are making plans to distribute millions of free coronavirus antibody tests after a version backed by the UK government passed its first major trials, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on Friday.

The fingerprick tests, which can tell within 20 minutes if a person has ever been exposed to the coronavirus, were found to be 98.6% accurate in secret human trials held in June, the newspaper reported.

China reports 22 new cases, including 16 in Xinjiang

Urumqi, the capital of China’s far western region of Xinjiang, said it has launched emergency response plan after the city reported 16 new coronavirus cases on Friday.

The regional government said all recent new infections and asymptomatic cases reported in the autonomous region were in Urumqi,it said on its official Weibo account on Saturday.

Xinjiang, home to most of China’s Uighur ethnic minority, has so far mostly avoided the worst of the coronavirus pandemic which erupted in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. As of 17 July, the region reported a total of 17 coronavirus cases, plus 11 asymptomatic cases. Another 269 people were under medical observation, according to the regional health commission.

COVID-19 recovery at 62.93%

India registered a total of 6,53,751 recoveries so far, according to the recent data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.This takes the COVID-19 recovery rate to 62.93 percent. 

On Saturday, the total number of COVID-19 infections climbed to 10,38,716 with 26,273 deaths.

India records 10,38,716 confirmed cases

India registered 34,884 COVID-19 infections and 671 deaths in past 24 hours, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday. With this, India's COVID-19 cases now stand at 10,38,716. 

Of the total, there are 3,58,692 active cases.

 

India's COVID-19 toll rises to 26,273

India's tally of coronavirus cases crossed 10.38 lakh on Saturday with 34,884 new patients testing positive, while the toll climbed to 26,273 with 671 fatalities in the past 24 hours.

Over 1.34 crore COVID-19 samples tested: ICMR

More than 1.34 COVID-19 samples have been tested so far, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), adding that 3,61,024 samples were tested on Friday alone.

Global toll for pandemic now above 6 lakh

Johns Hopkins University says the global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 600,000. The university's tally as of Saturday night says the United States tops the list with 140,103 deaths. It is followed by 78,772 fatalities in Brazil and 45,358 in the United Kingdom.

The number of confirmed infections worldwide has passed 14.2 million, out of which 3.7 million are in the United States. There are over 2 million in Brazil and more than 1 million in India. The World Health Organization again reported a single-day record of new infections with 259,848

Over 1.37 crore samples tested for COVID-19 so far

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 1,37,91,869 samples have been tested for COVID-19 up to July 18 with 3,58,127 samples being tested on Saturday.
