India reports over 38,000 new cases, takes total to 10.7 lakh

India reports 38,902 new cases of the corona virus on Sunday, taking the total to 10,77,618. This is the highest single-day rise in the number of fresh infections. The toll rises by 543 to 26,816.

US reports over 75,000 new cases

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Saturday reported 3,630,587 cases of new corona virus, an increase of 74,710 cases, and said the number of deaths had risen by 918 to 138,782, reports Reuters.

The CDC reported its tally of cases of the respiratory illness known as COVID-19, caused by a new corona virus, compared to a day earlier. The CDC figures do not necessarily reflect cases reported by individual states.

South Africa now 5th in world for infections

South Africa now ranks fifth in the world for confirmed corona virus cases caseload as the African continent faces the pandemic's first wave head-on, reports AP.

South Africa on Saturday reported 13,285 new confirmed cases for a total of 350,879. That puts the country ahead of Peru and makes up roughly half the cases in Africa.

India's COVID-19 recovery rate now stands at 62.6%

India’s COVID-19 recovery rate now stands at 62.6 percent. As many as 7,00,086 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged so far and the reported active COVID-19 cases in India now stand at 3,90,459, according to the Union Health Ministry.

India's COVID-19 caseload crosses 11-lakh mark

India's COVID19 case total crosses 11 lakh mark with the highest single-day spike of 40,425 new cases and 681 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The total cases stand at 11,18,043 including 3,90,459 active cases, 7,00,087 cured/discharged/migrated & 27,497 deaths, said health ministry.

 

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu remain worst-hit

With 3,10,455 confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,70,693) and Delhi (1,22,793).

India reports 37,148 new cases, taking the its total count to 11,55,191. The toll rises by 587 to 28,084. Total active cases are now more than 4 lakh.

Russia’s elite got access to experimental Covid-19 vaccine from April: Report

Scores of members of Russia’s business and political elite have been given early access to an experimental vaccine against Covid-19, according to people familiar with the effort, as the country races to be among the first to develop an inoculation, reports Bloomberg.

Top executives at companies including aluminum giant United Co. Rusal, as well as billionaire tycoons and government officials began getting shots developed by the state-run Gamaleya Institute in Moscow as early as April, the people said. They declined to be identified as the information isn’t public.

Over a million doses of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine possible by September: Researcher

Early estimates of the production a million doses of the University of Oxford's experimental COVID-19 vaccine by September could be an underestimate depending on how quickly late-stage trials can be completed, a researcher said on Monday, reports Reuters.

"There might be a million doses manufactured by September: that now seems like a remarkable underestimate, given the scale of what's going on," Adrian Hill of University of Oxford said, referring to the manufacturing capability of partner AstraZeneca.
